Before starting this painting, I had just spent two weeks with a pinched nerve in my lower neck, on top of pre-existing chronic pain and migraines. The intense pain prevented me from doing many things, including everyday chores such as loading the dishwasher. Laying on my heating pad throwing myself pity parties, I felt particularly appreciative when my friends or family would allow me to talk about my health issues, or ask how things were going with my neurology appointments. This experience made clear to me how much I cherish the relationships that support me when I need it most, and help me feel loved for my true, quirky self, without pressure to morph into something more ‘palatable’. In hopes of bringing more of those meaningful and powerful connections into my life, I began envisioning each connection as a lantern, burning brightly in the night. A lantern to attract strange and wonderful moths to my gloriously funky beacon of light.
